My daughter decided this year that she doesn’t want school lunches. Fair enough for me, only that mom has to find a way to give some healthy and spoil-proof lunches for school. This is harder than you think when you have a rather fussy eater. My search brought me to bento boxes and bento school lunches for kids.
There are lots of bento boxes on the market today, and I’ve managed to buy two. One is a simple square BPA free plastic bento box and one is a very fancy bento box by Zojirushi which is a great bent lunch box.
Easy Kids Lunches In A Bento Box
The Japanese Mothers Use Zojirushi Bento
Like any mother, I want my daughter have something much more than a peanut butter sandwich and an apple for her lunch. I actually, want to give her cooked meals. Only problem is that she is not allowed to microwave the food, so I needed a lunch box for kids that keeps the food warm by lunch time. Only kind of lunch box, be it bento or not, that does this is the range of Bento boxes by Zojirushi. I actually bought the Mr. Bento, in red color. My daughter was very excited when she saw it. Me, not that much. You see, it’s a great bento lunch box, but for adults.
It is too heavy for a six years old to carry it on the hallway to the lunch room. I also don’t like its cover as it has a long string and it disturbs when carrying the box. Plus, there is no space for a drink for the kid. For a bigger kid or an adult I believe it makes a great lunch box that keeps your food warm. I really wish I’d bought the smaller version of it, the Ms. Bento one. It looks that it has only three containers and it’s smaller. I may try that one, too.
Leak Proof Bento Box
Off course, you don’t want to have food spill in the lunch box. Generally, if the kids are smaller, I wouldn’t even consider given them anything that is liquid in a lunch box. However, you may want to make sure that the bento box is leak-proof. Something like Thermos is better for a smaller child.
Stainless Steel or Plastic Bento Box?
If you are concerned about BPA and other chemicals that the lunch boxes are made today, definitely go for a stainless steel bento box for your child. Apparently, the stainless steel one are very popular in Japan. The problem is to find a good quality one in US.
If you go for a plastic one, make sure it is BPA-free, at least.
